Gene Shalit shows he’s a crusty biggot

Thursday, January 5th, 2006 | Gay Stuff

This morning Kevin TiVo’d a review that Gene Shalit gave of Brokeback Mountain and, not to my suprise, it was … er… um… less than glowing… However what was surprising was the just nasty bigoted tone of the review. Now admittedly I’m a big fan of the movie however I also understand that not everyone will be and that its gonna get bad reviews. I even expect hateful reviews from places like the 700 club and the lot. But a review on NBC’s Today show that calls Jack’s character in that movie a ‘sexual predator’ crosses the line from bad review to being a flat out bigot. The only way you could come to that conclusion was to walk into the movie with an agenda to start AND THEN not pay attention during the movie. I’ve rarely agreed with his crappy reviews to begin with but I guess I’ve never picked up on him being hateful until now. NBC can’t get rid of him fast enough for my tastes…

I’ve got it on my tivo but i’m thinkin NBC’s lawyers will be on my ass if I post it so i’m just ganna hang on to it.. but stop by if ya wanna see it.. Screw it… Here is the clip i’m talking about. Check it out and let me know if kevin and I are overreacting.

Grrrr…. What an ass..

It’s fair use to post it as long as you are using it to make commentary. John at Crooks and Liars hasn’t been sued yet.

I’d be more worried about being slammed with bandwidth usage. And that’s not a trivial consideration either.

Oy vey. That man is such a fossil, I’m surprised he can stay upright long enough to give a review….

Lame. The way he boils the movie down to being all about Jack swindling Ennis into more and more “trysts” really misses the point. If that’s all he got out of this movie either he’s got strong pre-conceived bias against homosexual plots, or he fell asleep during the movie. Because, seriously, even the American Family review got more out of the movie than that.

Even Katie Couric looked a little shocked when they cut back to her after the review.

Sorry I found your site a bit late. But I came across your comments while researching the Gene Shalit “snafu” for an article I’m writing on GLAAD’s intolerance towards intolerance within the fictional media.
To perpetuate and preserve a “free society” there must be tolerance toward all, even those who see a fictional character in a fictional story in a different light. In his opinion he saw Jack as a sexual predator and I can see that from one point of view. To label him a bigot, I’ll give you the crusty part, based on a single review of a less than sympathetic character is “overreacting”. It is apparent that you were all ready biased towards Mr. Shalit and disagree often with his views.
The laws that have been placed to protect our opinions and statements must stand just as strong for ideas and speech that are less than popular or even contrary to popular believe. It’s kind of pointless to establish a constitutional cornerstone that would only guarantee speech if it meets with certain approval and those with special interest or agendas would fair better to remember that. Don’t weaken your position by attacking a movie critic for speaking his mind. His review was not overtly derogatory. It was what it was, a movie critique. He questioned Jack’s motivations and saw Ennis as weak and uncommitted.
Overall I found the movie dull and unconvincing. But I’m not a professional critic so take it easy on me.
At least they didn’t molest the sheep.

Keep smiling

All fair points… I would make a few of my own… First – read the entire thread on the blog about this before making judgements – My opinions about the man changed drastically based on his actions in the following days which were exceedingly cool…
Second, He definitely has the right to say whatever he feels about any subject as do I have the right to be offended by how he states them. The thing I was posing in this particular post is that NBC also has to evaluate whether it makes good business sense to use their medium to reflect these opinions… That said, as I said before – he since clarified his position in a noble way and in a way that i’m very satisfied with… Laws definitely protect the right of speech – but they don’t force private broadcasters to air them – the broadcasters make that choice based on the nature of the message they want to portray. There are other messages that reviewers could communicate that would have forced NBC to not air the segment – I was just asking for the same consideration (in an arguably less than eloquent way! :):)). Hell – if that weren’t the case Fox News would do a better job of covering stories in a way that didn’t piss the shit out of me – but i’m not their market….

Also keep in mind that this is a blog which chronicles my opinions at the moment… If you don’t follow the thread you won’t see my opinions grow and change… i’m not going to go back and change entries as my opinions change because I find it interesting to go back and read – but if you don’t follow the thread you’re gonna miss something…

Still Smiling! :):)
