Why do you think gay men predominate Shirley Q. Liquor’s fanbase??

Well, at the risk of being obvious, she does perform maily in gay bars… and drag has a history in the community…duh! We are also more politically incorrect at times, and, dare I say, more racists and have also some nastiness due to our own segregation, which is far from over. THta’s what her act is about… making people uncomfortable… and I guess that resonates more within our community than without. That an’ we will take any oportuniy to laugh at a man in a dress (I mean, for some of us every week, how tired is that? Scuse, me gotta go see a drag show).

Spike Lee gets money to make bad movies and recently made an awful one about blackface coming back into style: “Bamboozled”. The movie bombed and received awful reviews. Spike gets money from movie companies because they are afraid if they dont give it to him when he asks, he’ll call them racist. The ironic (and hipocritical) part is Spike probably hates Shirley, even though he just made a movie about blackface.

I just saw the man live and he rocks. … She rocks.

Anyway, I’m a straight girl and I fell in love with him….my husband took me to the show and was indeed uncomfortable. He tells me that next time is going to have to be without him.

Back to her. I love the whole act! The cool thing about her is that she’s not hateful…I saw blacks, whites, gays and straights just eating her up.

i was /am honored to have grown up in the same county as Shirley Q liquor, most people dont know that his started with a phone number that got around with an almost urban myth feel about it. no one new where how it got around but it was just constant rumors of who what how and where shirley was, at this time i t was not to uncommon to wait 2-5 hours to get thru and hear the new message of the day {or someitmes,week}, but it was always worth the wait, then she put out a few cassets adn now, well damn if we dont miss that gurl, but tickled pastel purple that all you dear people now can share and enjoy the fantabuluciousness which is Shirly Q, Liquor, {& chlamidia chanpagne, kmartina, lemonjelo,o-rangelo……etc….}

Do any of you know where I can find a schedule for where he plays?! Does he even have one?

I’m in New Orleans, but definitely willing to travel a little to see him.

I love Shirley. You can order phone calls from her: for 25 bucks, she will call a friend and talk about whatever is going on with him or her. She talked to Will for 30 minutes, and he said she was fantastic. The actor who does SQL also does two other characters, Betty Butterfield (a poor white woman who takes lots of tranquilizers and visits different churches looking for the right one, leading to some hilarious commentary on different denominations) and Dr Williams, a male 1970s doctor who prescribes Valium for every problem. In case of chest pains, he says “Take a Valium every five minutes until either the pain goes away or you pass out.”
