A few notes for a friday
Just getting to work but figured i’d throw a few notes up before I get there… Weekend is lookin kinda mellow so far. We’re going to be having dinner with Rick and Randy tonight which should be nice.. Rest of the weekend is looking kind of mellow so far.
Nina got snipped on tuesday so she’s restricted to the house until her wound heals. The trick with that is her energy is just fine so being confined to the house is making her nuts.. She is REALLY hyper and attention starved ( A combination of not being able to play with her friends and not wanting to leave us again for fear she’ll come back with another scar )… So we’re probably going to spend the weekend watching her and being mellow…
Do have a few movies I’d like to see so maybe i’ll fill it with that…
- The Savages
- Elizabeth, the golden years
- No Country for Old Men
Acceptance or Phobes
Ok.. So maybe I’m being too sensitive.. but i’ve seen a couple of things in the media lately that have really bugged me.. The first is this video floating around by Jimmy Kimmel as a response to the I f-ed Matt Damon video that his lady did (I’m not gonna link to it but just search YouTube and you’ll find it). So I know its intended to be funny and they’ll say they didn’t mean anything by it.. But to me it came across an awful lot like white actors doing black face back in the day.
The other case was on Make me a Supermodel (I’ve gotten sucked into it by Kevin – kind of like watching a train wreck..). Last night there was a scene where one of the guys decided to start calling two of the other guys on the show gay and women. There is a lot of back story that makes it not entirely surprising that it happened – this guy seemed to be having his masculinity threatened by some of the modeling stuff and having his gay roommate hitting on him. But regardless the producers and editors found it an interesting thing to show but kind of presented it in a ‘well thats not cool but its no big deal’ kind of way which I thought was shitty. It really rung awful similar to people calling us ‘fag’ in high school and then brushing it off…
It just feels some times like because we’ve gotten some more acceptance in the media we’ve also made it OK to parody but they haven’t quite figured out when parody is actually funny and when its just obnoxious…
Anyway – I’m probably just being silly but it bugged me…
This weekend
Quick weekend update.. Was a good one, despite the CRAPPY weather. Our buddy Ray from Calgary came down to visit on Thursday and stayed until last night. Had a rather mellow time – at least as compared to his trip down for Folsom a few years back which was crazy as you might expect – but still nice. Kevin took him to SFMOMA friday while I worked and then that night we went out for dinner and drinks with some friends.. Saturday was VERY chill (it was stormy) – TV time and out to Blowfish for sushi. Sunday we went out to Chrissy Field to run nina and then drove around the city.
Like I said – mellow but still pretty nice..
Audi and a disposable society…
What ever happened to cars that were made to last. Its becoming more and more clear that these days even car companies that I would have considered reputable (Audi, Mercedes, etc.) are conducting business in a way that encourages people to replace their cars regularly.
Case in point. Our Audi just fell out of warrantee. While it was in warrantee they covered EVERYTHING. Oil changes.. repairs.. tune-ups… the works. I got lulled into a false sense of security thinking that these guys were great and the car was a great car. But now that I’m out of warrantee its a completely different story. All SORTS of problems are starting to come up and every one of them seems to require very expensive repairs. Most recently the check engine light came on (again) and when I took it in (to a repair shop that wasn’t at the dealer) they asked me how often I changed the oil. Turns out that the oil changes they were doing under warrantee weren’t frequent enough and now the engine is showing signs of the damage that results… I was furious…
What’s worse is a friend of mine was considering buying his Audi that was just falling out of lease and was asking around for advice.. He is basically hearing the same thing from everyone he’s talked to (and I had heard it from another friend myself). I don’t know if its unique to audi but it clearly isn’t unique to my car..
Anyway.. I suppose its not entirely surprising.. The car makers need to sell cars to make money so why not make cars with a self destruct so they can sell you another one.. It just pisses me off – like the world needs big landfills full of cars that are less than 10 years old… its nuts…
Sorry… Just ranting
In a continuing effort…
to ping the blog a little more often here is my morning bus-bound-note! :):)
Though actually not a whole lot to report since yesterday… Our friend Ray is in town visiting from Calgary.. Poor guy came from Canada undoubtedly expecting a little California sunshine. Boy was he wrong… weather here this weekend is going to be NASTY.. rainy and cold… ah well – an excuse for me to finally check out the De Young.. :):)
Other than that just the usual. Am trying to plan a trip back east to visit Kevin’s ‘rents and mine before our dive trip to Fiji in may. so current plan is week in march in Gettysburg and Winston-Salem (Pinnacle actually) and then a week on a boat in Fiji. Neither of them can come fast enough for me.
And on a final silly note, I’ve got a new favorite quote and a new favorite site… I stumbled on Wikiquote… I really enjoy different proverbs and how they translate and this site is full of ’em.. Anyway – found this one and it has seemed kinda fitting lately (and I’m going to plead the fifth when asked why it resonates right now! :):))
Klug zu reden ist doch schwer, klug zu schweigen noch viel mehr
Ok.. thats it for now… more
