Dabbling with Creativity
So, in case you haven’t noticed, I think i’ve finally figured out how to futz with styles and templates in MT – and now I’ve run amok… Still trying to come up with something that suits me and seems somewhat classy.. Don’t know if this is it but I figured I’d give it a try and see what y’all think…
Just so you know – I didn’t pick the color scheme entirely… Since my better half does design for a living I figured I’d point him at picking colors and stuff (since he never stops reminding me that I shouldn’t be trusted with such things)… So I told him I wanted to use that stained glass window in our skylight as a theme and he picked colors that fit well with that…
So thats the general idea… I”m not ENTIRELY sold on the colors yet – it seems a little much to me… but its better than what I would have come up with and kevin says its ‘sophisticated’…
So… what y’all think? Be honest… (don’t worry – he doesn’t read this! ;))
Weekly Wrap-up #52 – Jobs
1. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Hmmm… I switched what I wanted to be ALL the time – it depended on what book my parents gave me to read at the time… I remember wanting to be an archeologist at one point because of a national geographic book I had on ancient egypt I had (LOVED the hieroglyphics and the cool costumes). I also wanted to be a teacher… used to play school ALL THE time with my brothers and sisters… Even got teachers to give me the ‘teachers editions’ to old books and left over dittos they didn’t use..
2. When did you get your first job? What was it?
I wasn’t allowed to get a job until my senior year in high school. My mom didn’t want me having work conflict with my school work. When I finally got one it was as a cashier at Knowlwoods restaurant in Irvine… Really hated it – hard work for not much money but it gave me mad money. Once I got into college I worked in random computer related jobs and by my senior year I was workin 3 jobs and goin to school – mostly cuz I enjoyed the work more than I enjoyed the classes I was takin..
3. What is your job now? Do you like it? Why or why not?
Now I’m a software engineer working on Final Cut Pro at Apple Computer. I actually love it now although its kickin my ass right now… REALLY Smart group of people and its kinda fun working on a product that people use for real life stuff – especially when you see the name of your product go by in the credits of a movie! :)…
4. What would be the worst job for you to have? Why?
Customer service of any kind (see my first job). Provided people are respectful I really enjoy interacting with people and customers. I have a ball working at trade shows answering questions for people. But customer service is a fucked up offshoot of that where customers seem to think that, because they bought a product, they’ve earned the right to treat people like dirt and I don’t have much patience for that.. Putting me on the other end of a phone or service counter from those kind of people would be a bad idea – Long as people are respectful I’m sure I’d be perfectly helpful – but I think i’d probably come out of my face at ’em if they started bein snots… 😉
5. What would be your ideal job if you could chose it? Why?
Hmmm… I’m thinkin the ideal job for me would be high tech training or teaching of some form though I haven’t quite found how that would work out just yet… But it seems that would be a great combination of all the things I love.. I LOVE to travel… I REALLY enjoy helpign people learn… And i’m a geek at heart… so it seems like a fun fit… Just haven’t found the right place to do that yet…
CRAZY Productive
OK… I know its kinda sad that I was stuck workin today – but like i’ve mentioned before – we’re trying to ship this crazy product. So thats what happens… But MAN… Was actually (aside from a kidna rocky start) a GREAT work day… I got SO MUCH done… feelin kinda proud of myself so I figured I’d brag…
I’m actually in pretty good shape for this product so I’m trying to pitch in where I can… Fixed one bug that no one had found yet (and would only find in some really obscure circumstances in english) and spent the rest of the time working on another bug that wasn’t in anything I knew anything about… but I was trying to help out where I could and it turns out I learned a lot and did a really good job of figuring out out.. it was kinda like an obsession … still haven’t fixed the bug but DAMN… got it down to where I can see exactly whats going on…
ANYWAY… Those of you who write software will know exactly what i’m talking about and have probably been there before… and those of you that don’t are probably sitting there going huh?…. Best comparison I can make is finding the one bulb that is out on a string of christmas lights… HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS until you can figure it out but once you do ya feel so much better..
Geek stuff… I’ll stop now… just happy… (kevin also brought me a beer as I worked which was sweet! :):))
happy saturday
And one more thing
The piece I worked on… (among others)… Full Unicode Support throughout the User Interface and Text Generators… For the non-geeks in the crowd, this means that you can add text in any language in use today at any point in the application… You can create titles for your video in Arabic.. you can name your clips in hebrew…. you can name your files in korean…. or any other text you can think of…
Airport ROCKS
Holy CRAP…. My Toyota dealer has an airport connection in their waiting room!!!…
Guess thats what comes from working in silicon valley and going to a big toyota dealer… they have LOTS of people drop off their cars in the morning so there is a huge waiting room with coffee, bagels, and airport! :):)
TOO FUNNY! 🙂
